Carrier Sizing for Most Carrier Types

Width15 inches, 38cm18 inches, 46cm20 inches, 51cm
Height20 inches, 51cm22 inches, 56cm24 inches, 61cm
These are approximate measurements for the body panel of structured carriers such as full buckle carriers, meh dais, and onbuhimos. These can vary a bit between styles, so it's recommended to draft a carrier out of cheap fabric to check the fit before making your final carrier.

These are FINISHED panel sizes and do not include seam allowances. You will need to add approximately a half inch to all four sides to account for the seam allowance.

These are approximate measurements for the straps of structured carriers such as full buckle carriers, meh dais, and onbuhimos.

These are standard length straps. Based on the wearer's shape and size, they may need more or less length. It's recommended to draft a carrier out of cheap fabric to check the fit before making your final carrier.

These are FINISHED strap dimensions and do not include seam allowances, nor the amount of the strap that overlaps with the body panel. You will typically need to add approximately a half inch to the sides to account for the seam allowance and about four inches to the length to overlap with the body panel for reinforcement stitches.

Widths show a range. Narrow straps are more "no-fuss" and wider straps typically have more support.

Pouch Sling Sizing

 Smallest Circumference (edges)Widest Circumference (middle)Width
Small48 inches, 122 cm50 inches, 127 cm21 inches, 53 cm
Medium53 inches, 135 cm55 inches, 140 cm21 inches, 53 cm
Large58 inches, 147 cm60 inches, 152 cm21 inches, 53 cm
XLarge64 inches, 162 cm66 inches, 167 cm21 inches, 53 cm
Pouch slings must be carefully sized to the wearer. The sizing here gives the range including the shorter circumference (around the top and bottom rail of the pouch.) The widest part of the pouch (around the middle of the curve) would be about 2" wider. Again, this is total circumference - when the sling is laying flat, the length is half of this since it is looped over on top of itself.

"Sizing" typically approximately matches what size unisex t-shirt you wear.

Ring Sling Sizing

 LengthWidth
XS65 inches, 1.7m26 - 32 inches, 70 - 80cm
S70 inches, 1.8m26 - 32 inches, 70 - 80cm
M75 inches, 1.9m26 - 32 inches, 70 - 80cm
L80 inches, 2.0m26 - 32 inches, 70 - 80cm
XL85 inches, 2.2m26 - 32 inches, 70 - 80cm
2XL90 inches, 2.3m26 - 32 inches, 70 - 80cm
Ring sling sizing is based on the wearer's size, aiming for a thigh-length tail. However, a tail can be anywhere from 12" long all the way to mid-shin and still be safe - therefore ring sling sizing is very flexible. Size is approximately equivalent to unisex t-shirt size.

Slings with tapered tails are measured from the rings down to the center of the taper.

This does not include the extra length needed to fold through the rings to sew the shoulder.

A 29"-30" wide sling is typically sufficient for most ages, from newborn through preschooler age.

With few exceptions, almost any size wearer can use any size woven wrap; wrap size just changes what carry styles you can use the wrap for. The most versatile size needed for full-length carries is referred to as one's "base size." Base size usual starts at a size 5 for wearers who wear unisex size small or extra small shirts, size 6 for medium to large t-shirt wearers, size 7 between large and approximately 2XL, size 8 for 2XL-3XL, and so forth. One's base size may be one or two sizes longer than this when wrapping a toddler or preschooler compared to wrapping an infant.

Other sizes are then referred to by their relation to one's base size. For a base 6 wearer, a size 4 wrap would be referred to as a "base-2" or "base minus two" sized wrap.

Base and base-2 are both popular, versatile sizes, but any size wrap can be usable in some way.

A standard width of 27"-29" is typically sufficient for most ages, newborn through preschool.
