Buckle Onbuhimo

Basic Tutorial
Carrier Description

A buckle onbuhimo is a modern variation of the traditional Japanese onbuhimo. A Buckle Onbuhimo is simply a vaguely rectangular body panel with padded backpack-like padded straps, secured with either plastic buckles or ladder locks. They are best suited to older infants and toddlers who can sit unassisted because the open sides mean they work best with baby’s arms out of the top of the carrier. They are designed as back carriers, but some people do choose to use them as front carriers as well, particularly if the straps unbuckle so they can be crossed behind the wearer’s back.

They work great for up-and-down toddlers because of how quick they are to put on, and they work great for tandem wearing an older child on the back over a front carrier holding a younger baby up front. They are also popular for wearing during pregnancy since the carrier has no waistband.
